One of Arizona’s most exciting young athletes is headed to one of the state’s premier programs.

Class of 2029 ATH Sonny Norwood has transferred from Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix to Basha High School in Chandler, adding another talented playmaker to a Bears team coming off a state championship season and looking to make another run at the top.
Norwood burst onto the scene during his freshman campaign with the Pride, showcasing his versatility by playing all over the field. Whether lined up at quarterback, running back, or wide receiver, the dynamic sophomore proved to be one of the most dangerous young weapons in Arizona.
Breakout Freshman Season
During the 2025 season, Norwood appeared in 12 games and made an impact in a variety of ways. The versatile athlete rushed for 591 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also showing off his ability as a passer by throwing for 418 yards and three touchdowns. His ability to create explosive plays and contribute at multiple positions quickly established him as one of Arizona’s rising stars in the Class of 2029.
A New Home With Championship Expectations
Now, Norwood heads east to Chandler, joining a Basha program fresh off a state championship run. The Bears have established themselves as one of Arizona’s elite programs and will once again enter the season with expectations of competing for another championship.
Adding a player with Norwood’s athleticism and versatility gives Basha another dynamic piece as they look to reload and make a push toward back-to-back titles.
Patience Required
While Norwood’s arrival undoubtedly boosts the Bears’ roster, his impact won’t come immediately. Under current AIA transfer regulations, Norwood is expected to sit out the first five games of the season following his transfer from Mountain Pointe.
Despite the waiting period, the talented sophomore could provide a significant boost for the Bears down the stretch once he becomes eligible.
Could Sonny Be the Piece That Helps Basha Repeat?
Basha already possesses one of the deepest rosters in Arizona, but adding a player with Norwood’s skill set only raises the ceiling.
His versatility and ability to make plays from multiple positions make him a valuable addition to a program with championship aspirations. While he’ll have to wait until midseason to make his debut in black and gold, Sonny Norwood could prove to be an important piece as the Bears look to defend their title and pursue back-to-back state championships.
