Ty Amundsen resigns as Millennium boys head basketball coach
In a stunning turn of events that sent shockwaves throughout the Arizona and national high school basketball world, head coach Ty Amundsen of the Millennium Tigers has resigned from his position in order to take an assistant coaching job under Arizona State’s Bobby Hurley. The Tigers are widely seen as the favorites to hoist the open division crown this year, with two blue chip prospects in Cameron Holmes and Adan Diggs, a transfer from Williams Field. The Tigers also have many talented supporting cast members including DJ Spencer and Adrian Higuera. Millennium had built up a standard of excellence and dominance during Amundsen’s tenure, accumulating a 138-51 record, winning 3 state titles at his time in Goodyear. Prior to his time at Millennium, he won 3 more state titles at Estrella Foothills High School and also went on dangerous playoff runs at St. Mary’s. Amundsen always had his Tigers battle tested for the Arizona playoffs with tough and rigorous national schedules, truly elevating Millennium to a national brand considered one of the best on the west coast. Another accolade that Amundsen holds is getting the Tigers to be a Nike elite high school program, an honor that few schools have in the whole country. The move by Hurley’s staff to acquire Amundsen is a very intelligent move. It should definitely add to the Sun Devil’s abilities to recruit the Arizona talent hot bed, one of the most prosperous and lucrative in the country. Arizona has truly elevated itself to be one of the most consistently good states for high school basketball with multiple teams last year making MaxPreps top 25 appearances over the course of the year. The Tigers should still have the ability to make a deep playoff run this year as they have one of the most talented rosters not only in the state, but the entire country.
